Are you a budding author with a great story to tell?

Or do you just have the dream of seeing your name on the cover of a book?

Well, I have some exciting news for you! I'm going to show you step by step how to publish your very own children's book on Amazon.

Yes, you heard that right!

With Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), you can turn your dream of becoming a published author into a reality.

Note, that there other self-publishing platforms like IngramSpark and Draft2Digital as well.

Before diving into this post, make sure to check out our full guide on children's book publishing on our site for a comprehensive overview of the process.

Also, don't worry if you've never published a book before, I'll walk you through the whole process. From writing and editing your book, to creating a cover and formatting it for Kindle, to uploading it to KDP and making it available for purchase.

So grab your notebook and pen, or trusty tablet .. and get ready to take notes, because by the end of this post, you'll have all the information you need to publish your own book on Amazon.

  1. Write Your Children's Book. This can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few years, depending on your writing schedule and how complex your story is. Note there are other options to creating a children's book, not just writing, but that is the most commonly recognized type of children's book.
  2. Edit and Revise Your Book. This is an important step to ensure that your book is free of errors and is the best it can be. You can hire a professional editor or use a free editing software like Grammarly.
  3. Create a Book Cover. You can hire a professional designer to create a cover for you or use a free tool like Canva to design your own cover.
  4. Format Your Book for Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). This will involve converting your book into a digital format that is compatible with Kindle devices. You can use a free tool like Calibre to convert your book to Kindle format.
  5. Create a KDP Account. Go to the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing website, and sign up for a free account. This will allow you to upload and publish your book on Amazon.
  6. Upload Your Book to KDP. Once you have a KDP account, you can upload your book to the platform and set your price.
  7. Self-publish Your Book. Once your book is uploaded and formatted, you can publish your book and make it available for purchase on Amazon.

Publishing a children's book on Amazon using Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a great way for aspiring authors to get their work out there, or to create something cool that children will enjoy and allow you to earn some extra cash!

Understanding that it's not just about being an author, but being a creator or publisher, or whatever you want to call yourself has a person that creates and sells books.

The first step in the process is to create a book that appeals to your target audience, whether it be a children’s picture book or a chapter book for older children.

Once you have your manuscript ready, the next best step is to format it...

Amazon has the Kindle Kids’ Book Creator and can create a professional-looking cover design, although I don't use it or really recommend that you use it either.

I prefer to just use Canva and create a manuscript that can be used to first upload and create a paperback or hardcover book.

It's important to keep in mind that self-publishing is not an easy task and it requires a lot of hard work and dedication.

There's a learning curve, but with the right tools and resources, it can be a great way to launch your book.

Some of the best things about self-publishing on Amazon is that you can set your own list price, have more control over your book’s details and you don’t have to spend much money compared to the traditional publishing route.

To help you through the process, be sure to watch the video below and check out our step-by-step guide on children's book publishing from our Publisher Report YouTube channel.

Alternatives to Amazon KDP for Self-Publishing Children's Books

Other self-publishing options include platforms such as IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, and Smashwords.

These services allow authors to upload and distribute their books to a wide range of online retailers and libraries, in addition to Amazon.

They also offer additional features such as print on demand and global distribution...

However, it's important to note that these options may have different costs and fees associated with them, and some may have stricter formatting requirements.

It's a good idea to research and compare the different options before making a decision on which platform to use.

  • IngramSpark: is a popular self-publishing platform that provides a variety of services to authors, including book printing, distribution, and sales.
  • Draft2Digital: is another self-publishing platform that allows authors to distribute their books to multiple retailers, including Amazon, Apple Books, and Barnes & Noble.
  • Smashwords: is a self-publishing platform that distributes ebooks to a wide range of retailers and libraries, including Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo.

At the end of the day, remember that the key to success is to write (or create in the case of a children's book with no or very few words) a good book, and to get it in front of the right audience, to become a best seller as a self-publisher.

Keep in mind that the most popular options are Kindle ebooks and children's picture books, but don't be afraid to experiment with different formats and categories.

Good luck on your journey to becoming a published children's book author!

And don't forget that publishing your own children’s book can be a creative outlet and a great way to share your story with the world, no matter how many words it does or doesn't have.
